Lessons in Dressing: The Devil Wears Pilosoule
Looks that stand up 20 years later
Other than Superbad, I maintain that The Devil Wears Prada is the most quotable film of all time. I have a group chat called Runway Magazine where we don’t speak except to drop a quote every 2–5 months. Someone responds with another quote. No one asks how anyone is. The cycle continues.
We recently broke protocol to critique the Devil Wears Prada 2. The trailer seems to have recalled all the human moments that transpired in the first film - Nigel opening on “look what TJ Maxx dragged in” and then explaining to a seemingly lobotomized Miranda that Andrea was “one of the Emily’s.”
Needless to say, this is a film that did a good F montage - there’s the fashion girls commuting montage and the makeover montage. Then we have Miranda dropping coats on Andy’s desk asking her to perform a series of obtuse tasks - “where is that piece of paper I had in my hand yesterday morning?” and “get me that little table that I like at that store on Madison.”
It’s not groundbreaking intel that the movie stands the test of time. I cut my bangs emulating a post glow up Andy the first time I watched it.
A selection of quotes and fits and how the devil might dress if she was wearing Pilosoule!
“What you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean.” - Miranda
The cerulean monologue still shatters. Miranda’s point - no one is untouched by the world of fashion, even the people who think they are.
“By all means, move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me.” - Miranda
“I need 10-15 skirts from Calvin Klein.” - Miranda
“What kind of skirts?” - Andy
“Please bore someone else with your questions.” - Miranda

“One time an assistant left the desk because she sliced her hand open with a letter opener and Miranda missed Lagerfeld just before he was about to board a 17 hour flight to Australia. She now works at TV Guide.” - Emily
“Are we doing a before and after story I don’t know about"? - Nigel
That’s all.
